“I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas” – 2010

No need to dream about the white, fluffy stuff ‘cause we received 10+ inches on November 22nd & currently have had at least 16”to 20”in our area. It is beautiful outside this time of year but travel can be treacherous.

In JANUARY, on our 28th Anniversary, we went for a horse ride through the woods. It was a wonderful ride in the white snow on two black horses and the weather was nice. The next week the temps dipped to -21 to -27 degrees.

Our local news channel announced in FEBRUARY that all 50 states had some snow! Yipee!

In MARCH our dog, Molly, was hit by a truck but is doing fine after a hefty vet bill. It was beginning to be a very long winter but when we saw swans we thought spring was just around the corner!

In APRIL Russ’s brother & his wife invited us to ride with them to Arizona. We thought, “Oh, yes, we’re getting away from snow!” Oh, no, we saw snow all the way to Arizona! We took the “back roads” so we were able to see some beautiful scenery. We visited Russ’s parents, his other brother, & relatives. We stopped at the Grand Canyon and drove through snow covered mountains on the way home. We thought winter would be over by the time we arrived home…..Oh, no!

MAY 7th brought more snow. We had tickets to the new Twins Stadium. The game was cancelled due to the weather. We did go another day. By mid-month we were in the woods picking morel mushrooms, and then the rains began. They continued all summer.

We did camp a few days near Duluth, MN in JUNE.  Jesse moved home for “two weeks”. He & cat, Gizmo, are still here! He plans to move back to Grand Rapids soon to finish school. He has been working at Pizza Hut and plans to transfer to the one in Grand Rapids.

JULY came ‘round and it was time to put up the hay. We had a good crop but it was hard to find a couple of rainless days for it to dry. There was enough for our 4 equines & some to sell. Sadly, Zoe the Persian cat died. We only had her 1-1/2 years but she was 14 years old. Then, Gizmo was injured.  Another vet bill and several months of recovery have left her healthy but with a paralyzed tail. We still have Puff-n-Stuff & Silver the kitties, Thumper the rabbit, chickens & turkeys (although the foxes have eaten many). We’d be millionaires if not for our pets!

Bemidji’s All-School Reunion took place in AUGUST. It was fun to see faces from the past.

In SEPTEMBER Russ built the outhouse! I must say that it has been used. About a week after its installation our drain-field quit working. Jesse wasn’t sure how to handle life without the modern convenience.

The interior of the house was re-painted in OCTOBER. It sure does look nice.

We both worked the NOVEMBER election. The experience helped us learn who some of our neighbors are. Deer hunting was a bust for us. Guess we’ll have to eat those worthless hens that aren’t laying any eggs!..THAT IS A THREAT, GIRLS!!! Granddaughter, Trista, got a nice buck & a doe hunting with her Grandpa. She & little brother, Ricky, are busy with sports at Bertha/Hewitt School. Dad is still teacher/coach & Mom is a first responder/volunteer firefighter.

Now DECEMBER is upon us so Nola is busy with working in the gift shop, decorating the house for Christmas & doing some shopping. Russ is busy with work and is still on the township board.

Remember the reason for the season….. “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.  Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:10, 11)
